Our Biggest Food Drive Yet for Feeding San Diego

Hunger and food insecurity continue to be major issues in San Diego County and across the United States.

Recent statistics paint a sobering picture:

  • According to Feeding San Diego, 1 in 6 San Diegans face hunger, including 1 in 4 children.
  • Over the past few years, the need for food assistance has risen significantly, especially since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
  • Feeding San Diego reports distributing over 46 million meals in the past year, a 54% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels.
  • The demand for food assistance remains high even as pandemic restrictions ease, with food banks still seeing elevated use.
  • Food banks across the country are still seeing substantially higher needs than before 2020. Supply chain issues and rising food costs are also straining their resources.

With hunger affecting so many in our community, charities like Feeding San Diego rely on donations and support. As a San Diego-based company, Pacific Debt Inc. is committed to doing its part to help fight food insecurity.

During the month of June Pacific Debt Inc. employees pitched in to help the San Diego Food Bank. Employees brought in canned goods and other non perishable items to help those less fortunate. After nearly a month, the PDI team brought in over 4 barrels of food!

Each quarter PDI makes it a priority to participate in charitable giving. You can find out more about the San Diego Food Bank by clicking here.

FAQs

  • Why is food insecurity still an issue in San Diego?

Even before the pandemic, many San Diego families were struggling to afford basic needs. COVID-related job losses, reduced work hours, and rising costs have pushed more people into food insecurity. Organizations like Feeding San Diego continue to see elevated demand for food assistance.

  • What items are most needed for food bank donations?

Food banks need non-perishable, nutrition-dense foods like canned tuna/chicken, beans, whole grain pasta, peanut butter, and canned fruits and vegetables. They also appreciate personal care items and grocery gift cards. Check with your local food bank to see current needs.

  • How can I volunteer at Feeding San Diego?

Feeding San Diego welcomes volunteers to help sort and package food in their warehouse as well as assist at food distribution events. You can fill out an online volunteer application on their website to get started.

  • Are financial donations accepted?

Yes! Feeding San Diego and other food banks accept online monetary donations. Even small amounts go a long way in helping them source and distribute food. You can donate right on their website.

  • Can I donate food from my garden or orchard?

Absolutely! Food banks encourage donations of fresh produce from home gardens and trees. Contact your local food bank first to learn about drop-off procedures and get times. Homegrown fruits and veggies are invaluable.
